How to Record Vocals in a Rehearsal Room (No Booth, No Acoustic Treatment)
The vocal is the stem everyone will judge. Listeners forgive a thin guitar tone and never notice a slightly boxy tom, but a washy, roomy vocal reads as "demo" within two seconds. Which is unfair, because the vocal is usually recorded in the worst acoustic space the band has access to: a concrete rehearsal room with a drum kit ringing in sympathy in the corner.
Good news: the fixes are cheap and mostly behavioral. Here is what actually moves the needle, in order.
Use the dynamic mic you already own
Internet wisdom says vocals need a large-diaphragm condenser. In a treated studio, sure. In your rehearsal room, a condenser is a liability, because it hears everything: the fridge, the traffic, and above all the room itself, that boxy concrete reflection you cannot un-record. A plain dynamic mic, the SM58 sitting in your gig bag right now, hears mostly what is directly in front of it. That rejection is worth more than any amount of condenser sheen. Half the vocals on classic records went through exactly this mic, so nobody gets to call it a compromise.
Distance is your room treatment
The closer the singer is to the mic, the louder the voice relative to the room. At ten centimeters, roughly a fist between lips and grille, the voice dominates and the concrete almost disappears. You get proximity effect, the bass boost of singing close, and that is fine: a mix can remove extra low end easily, but it can never remove room reverb that is printed into the take. Add a pop filter, or the classic sock over the grille, because plosives at that distance will thump.
If you want to spend one evening improving the room, hang the thickest duvet you own on the wall the singer faces, and sing toward it from a meter away. The duvet eats the first reflection, which is the one that does most damage. A duvet, a blanket over a mic stand, an open wardrobe full of clothes: all of them beat egg cartons, which do approximately nothing.
Record the vocal alone, after the band
Tracking vocals live with the band means every other instrument bleeds into the vocal mic, and that bleed rises and falls whenever the vocal fader moves in the mix. Keep the live take as a guide if the energy matters, then overdub the keeper vocal with the band silent, singer on closed-back headphones, backing track at the lowest level that still carries the performance. Loud headphones leak click and guitars straight back into the mic.
Set the input gain so the loudest chorus line peaks around -12 dB, not flirting with zero. A clipped vocal take is the one recording mistake with no repair. Then record three full passes, whole song, and pick per section afterward. Line-by-line perfectionism kills the performance; full passes keep the phrasing alive and still give you options.
Export it as its own stem
The lead vocal is always its own file, and stacked backing vocals bounce to one stereo stem. No reverb printed on either, effects belong in the mix where they can still be adjusted. Dry, close, and clean is exactly what a mixer wants to receive, because every decision is still open.
