How the Stem Separator works

Four steps, all in your browser. Your song never leaves your device.

  1. Drop a song

Any finished song, MP3 or WAV.

  2. It splits

Vocals, drums, bass and the rest.

  3. Listen and solo

    Mute or solo any stem.

  4. Download

Save each stem as a WAV file, or all of them in one ZIP.

What you get from your song

Five stems from every song, ready for practice, covers, remixes and karaoke.

Vocals

The acapella: lead and backing vocals on their own, for remixes, covers and practice.

Stem separator questions

Short answers about quality, files, phones and rights.

The basics

A stem separator, also called a stem splitter, takes a finished song and splits it into its parts: vocals, drums, bass and the rest, like guitars, keys and synths. Each part is called a stem. You can listen to every stem on its own, mute it or download it.

Yes. Without an account you hear a 30-second preview of your song split into stems. With a free Bandmixr account you split whole songs and download every stem as a WAV file.

No. It is a free online stem splitter that runs in your browser, on a computer or a phone. There is nothing to install and nothing is uploaded.

WAV, FLAC, MP3, AIFF, M4A and OGG, for songs up to 15 minutes.

What to do with the stems

Yes. To remove the vocals from a song, download the Instrumental stem: the whole song without the vocals, ready for karaoke, a cover or to rap over the beat.

Drop the song, wait for the separation and download the Vocals stem. That is the acapella: the lead and backing vocals, isolated from the instruments.

Yes. Load the stems into your DAW and build a new version around them. Only release a remix of a song you have the rights to.

Partly. Download the stems and change their levels in your DAW. Small changes work best, since bigger ones bring out what the split left behind. A real new mix needs the original stems of the recording, and Bandmixr mixes and masters those into a finished song.Mix your own stems with Bandmixr

Quality and devices

Splitting a finished song is never perfect. You may hear a little of the other instruments in a stem, most of all where parts play in the same range. Vocals and drums usually come out cleanest. If you have the original stems of the recording, mixing those always sounds best.

About a minute for a song on most computers. Phones take a few minutes for a whole song. It all runs on your device, so keep the tab open until it is done.

Yes, in a recent browser. The first time, the separator loads once, so use Wi-Fi for that. After that it starts right away.

Privacy and rights

No. The separation runs in your browser on your own device. Your song never reaches our servers, and we never use music to train AI.Why we never train AI on your music

Split songs you have the rights to use, like your own music or songs you have permission for. Splitting a song does not give you the right to release its stems or a remix of it.
