You recorded the parts. The drums sound fine on their own. The bass is solid, the guitars are tight, the vocal take is the one. Then you push all the faders up together and it turns to mud. Nothing has room to breathe, the vocal disappears behind the guitars, and the kick and bass feel like one blurry thump.
That is the real problem, and it is why learning how to mix a full band from stems is harder than mixing any single instrument. A vocal on its own only has to sound good by itself. A full band has to sound good while five or six things compete for the same space at the same time. Why a full band is harder than a single instrument
Sound is not unlimited space. Every instrument lives somewhere in the frequency range, from the deep low end up to the bright top, and a lot of them want to live in the same place. Bass and kick drum both pile into the low end. Guitars, keys, snare and the body of the vocal all crowd the low-mids and mids. When two sounds occupy the same frequencies at the same volume, your ear cannot separate them. That is called frequency masking, and it is why a busy mix sounds like a wall instead of a band.
Fixing it is not about making things louder. It is about giving each instrument its own slot so your ear can pick it out. Four moves do most of the work: hierarchy, frequency carving, panning, and dynamics.
Step 1: Build the hierarchy
Before you touch an EQ, decide what matters most. In most songs the vocal is the star, the kick and snare keep the body moving, and everything else supports them. Fix that order in your head.
Now set rough levels in that order. Start with the kick and bass as your foundation, bring the rest of the drums in, then the vocal, then guitars and keys underneath. The supporting parts should feel like they are holding up the lead, not wrestling it. If you find yourself pushing the vocal louder and louder just to hear it, the problem is usually not the vocal level. Something underneath it is masking it, and you fix that in the next steps, not with the fader.
Step 2: Carve frequency space
This is where most home mixes are won or lost.
Start with a high-pass filter on everything that is not bass or kick. Guitars, vocals, keys and overheads do not need anything below roughly 80 to 120 Hz. That low rumble is not adding warmth, it is adding mud and stealing headroom from the instruments that actually own the low end. Rolling it off instantly cleans up the bottom.
Next, sort out the kick and bass, the classic clash. Pick one to own the deep sub (often the kick around 60 to 80 Hz) and let the other sit just above it. A small EQ cut on the bass where the kick punches through, plus a matching boost somewhere the bass can shine, lets both be heard instead of blurring together.
The low-mids, roughly 200 to 500 Hz, are where mud collects. Almost every instrument has energy here, so when you stack a full band, this region piles up fast. A gentle cut in the low-mids on guitars and keys, the parts that do not need to dominate there, opens the whole mix. The goal is slotting. Each instrument gets a frequency range where it is clearest, and steps back where another instrument owns the space.
Step 3: Pan for separation
If every instrument sits dead center, they all fight for the same point in space. Panning spreads them out so your ear can place them left to right, which reduces clashing even before you touch EQ.
Keep the anchors in the center: kick, snare, bass, and lead vocal. Then move the supporting parts outward. Two rhythm guitars panned hard left and right sound wide and stop competing with each other. Keys, percussion, doubled vocals and background harmonies can sit at various points across the field. The center stays clear for the things that need it most, and everything else gets its own address.

Step 4: Make vocals and drums sit
Even with EQ and panning done, the loudest moments can still collide. A big guitar chord can swallow the vocal for a beat. The bass can flap against the kick on every hit.
This is where dynamics help. The plain-English version of sidechaining: when the kick hits, the bass ducks down for a fraction of a second so the kick punches through, then the bass comes right back. You barely hear it happen, but the low end suddenly feels tight instead of muddy. The same de-masking logic works for vocals. When you carve a little space in the guitars and keys exactly where the vocal lives, and gently control their peaks, the vocal sits on top without you cranking it. The vocal feels present, not loud. That is the difference between a mix that works and one that just gets pushed harder until it distorts.
