The good news is that mud is not a mystery. It is almost always the same problem, in the same place, and it has a real fix you can learn.
What muddy actually means
Mud lives mostly between 200 and 500 Hz. That is the lower-middle of the frequency range, the part that gives instruments their body and warmth. A little energy there is good. The trouble is that almost every instrument in a band produces a lot of it. The low strings of a guitar, the body of a snare, the chest of a vocal, the upper range of a bass, the left hand of a piano. They all pile into the same narrow band.
When five sources stack their energy in the same zone, you do not hear five instruments. You hear one congested wall. Nothing is wrong with any single track. The problem is that nobody made room for anyone else. That congestion is what your ears read as amateur. A clean mix is not louder or fancier, it just has space.
The four usual suspects
Almost every muddy mix comes from one or more of these.
No high-pass filter. Guitars, vocals, and overheads all carry low-frequency rumble you cannot hear as a note but can absolutely hear as buildup. Left unchecked, every track is fighting for the bottom of the mix.
Too many instruments in one range. Two guitars, a piano, and a synth all playing in the same octave will mush together no matter how well they were recorded. Arrangement causes mud as often as mixing does.
Too much reverb. Reverb is a low-mid generator. A long, dark reverb on everything smears the whole mix and washes out the gaps between notes. Beginners almost always use more than they need.

Give each instrument its own lane
The fix is mostly subtraction, not addition. You are not adding clarity, you are removing the clutter that hides it.
Start with high-pass filtering. Roll off the low end on anything that is not bass or kick. A vocal rarely needs much below 100 Hz. A guitar can usually lose everything under 100 to 120 Hz without sounding thin. This alone clears a surprising amount of fog.
Next, subtractive EQ in the 200 to 500 Hz range. Find the track that owns the mud (often a rhythm guitar or a piano) and pull a few dB out of its low-mids with a wide cut. You are not trying to make that track sound good in isolation. You are making space for the others.
Then think in lanes. Bass owns the very bottom. Kick shares it but gets carved so the two do not mask each other. Guitars sit in the mids. Vocals and cymbals take the top. When each instrument owns a frequency lane, the mix opens up.
Why de-mudding by ear is genuinely hard
Carving low-mids correctly takes trained ears and trustworthy speakers, and most home setups have neither.
Earbuds and laptop speakers barely reproduce the 200 to 500 Hz region accurately, so you cannot judge what you cannot hear. Cheap monitors in an untreated room lie to you in the opposite direction, exaggerating boom that is not really on the track. You end up cutting too much, or not enough, with no reliable reference to tell which. This is the part that takes years of mixing to develop, and it is the single biggest reason a demo sounds amateur even when the playing is great.

One last habit separates clean mixes from muddy ones. Never trust a single playback system. A mix that sounds great on your headphones can fall apart on a phone.
